An award-winning garden designer holding qualifications in both Garden and Permaculture Design.
Creating beautiful, functional, sustainable gardens.
Completed a year long Diploma in Garden Design in 2018, passing with Distinction. This was followed by a practical course in Natural Building Techniques with Hartwyn in Scotland, and then completion of a Certificate in Permaculture Design with Shift Bristol. Currently studying for the RHS Level 2 Certificate.
Since completion of her Diploma, Jessica has designed both domestic and commercial gardens, as well as a show garden at RHS Malvern, which was awarded Gold and 'People's Choice'.
Jessica is committed to the Permaculture Principles of 'People Care, Earth Care, Fair Share'. In light of this, her designs tread softly, and utilise natural, reclaimed and local materials. Planting is designed to thrive with minimal watering and maintenance, and to support wildlife.
Happiest when muddy, Jessica carries out the soft-landscaping for her projects including soil preparation and planting.
'A particular favourite was the inviting space designed by Jessica Makins, An Artist's Studio at Home. The shipping container was softened with a rugged coating of cob (a natural building material made from clay, sand, straw, and water) and finished with a smooth earth floor polished with beeswax. The natural warmth of the terracotta walls complimented the green palette of texturised planting. Black Pearl Euphorbia and Ravenswing were two of our favourites in the scheme.'
Carol Klein came to visit Jessica's 2019 show garden, describing the planting as 'inspired'.
